HEATHER DAY-MELGAR (she/they)
Heather is a geographer, naturalist, writer, researcher, activist, herbalist, and yoga instructor living in Portland, Oregon. She discovered the philosophical path of yoga in 2000, in a tiny Ozark mountain town, when she came across a fabric bag with an “om” symbol printed on it and felt called to understand the strange magnetic pull of the symbol. That led to years of transcendental meditation practice and mythic studies, and the rest is history, as they say.
Heather began a strict asana practice in 2015, and was 200 hour certified in 2017, and has continued to build her foundation and education with ongoing workshops, study, and a solid asana practice. Her favorite class to teach is a well-balanced vinyasa class for all levels, offering many accessible modifications. The point is to feel liberated and joyful in the movements, the sacred wild embodied. She has experienced firsthand the life-changing power of breath, mantra, and movement to heal trauma, anxiety, and substance abuse, as well as help heal injuries.
As an activist, Heather believes in the concept of Ahimsa as liberation and action, and fully believes that businesses and practitioners in this space must be vocal against injustice, as spiritual practices that don’t engage with the shadow are not whole practices. She is always looking for ways to make yoga as accessible and equitable as possible. She has an M.S. in geography, and B.A. in psychology. With a background in environmental science, nature is her muse, as she is always practicing to reweave relationship with land and spirit, which you will find in her teaching. Heather has a special fondness for teaching classes that incorporate altar building, goddesses, moon phases, plants, the seasons, astrology, and myth.
